Swamper Trade CultureReport

English:Swamper Trade Culture · Game Mechanics

The goods rule shared by the six Swamp factions. It is why no shop in the Swamp ever stocks bread, cactus or Holy Nation books, and why hashish, sake and rice go for three quarters of the usual price here.

Swamper Trade Culture is the goods rule the game assigns to the six factions of the Swamp.

What a trade culture is

The game does not let every shop stock the same things. Each faction carries a "trade culture" setting, and that setting governs three things: which items will never appear in its shops, which items count as contraband there, and which items have their price multiplied.

So the shelf a player walks up to is not random. It is what this table computes. There are a dozen or so of these tables in the game; the Swamp uses this one.

What you cannot buy here

Twenty-one entries, in two groups.

The first group is Holy Nation cultural material: the six books A Holy Purpose, Birth Of The Phoenix, Book Of Grace, Book Of Sacrifice, Holy Edict and The Holy Flame. The Swamp is about as far from the Holy Nation as the map allows, and these books do not travel that far.

The second group is food and crops: bread, cactus, chewsticks, cooked vegetables, cotton, dustwich, foodcube, greenfruit, meatwrap and wheatstraw, plus grog, cactus rum and the empty cans and bottles they leave behind. One production machine is on the list too, the grind machine.

Put plainly: the Swamp has no wheat and no cactus, so it has nothing made out of wheat or cactus either.

Price multipliers

ItemMultiplier
Bloodrum125%
Bread125%
Cactus Rum125%
Foodcube125%
Meatwrap125%
Gohan75%
Hashish75%
Hemp75%
Riceweed75%
Sake75%
Wheatstraw20%

Above 100% means dearer, below 100% means cheaper. The table describes the local economy accurately: what the Swamp grows itself — hemp, riceweed, sake — is cheap, what has to be carried in — bread, rum — is dear, and wheatstraw is worth a fifth of its usual price because nobody here grows wheat.

Bread and wheatstraw appear on both the unspawnable list and the multiplier list. That is how the game data itself is written; the multiplier column is simply left in place unused.

Contraband and illegal buildings

Both are none.

Nothing is illegal in the Swamp, and no building you put up will trigger a dialogue event. The Holy Nation rule where the wrong structure brings someone to your door does not exist here. It is also why the Hounds and the Grayflayers can grow hemp and sell hashish out in the open.
