OronReport

English:Oron · Characters

A Shek retainer who wants out of peasant labour and back onto a battlefield; pay 3,500 Cats to buy him out from his lord and he joins.

Oron is a Shek Retainer and a unique recruitable character. He turns up in the bar of one of the three Shek towns — Admag, Squin or Last Stand — and there is only ever one Oron in a given game, in a randomly chosen location. The wiki adds a caveat: the listed spawns for unique recruits are only possible locations, and some of them may not spawn at all.

"Peasant life is killing my soul"

Oron's case is stated very plainly in his one and only speech:

I need to be freed, 3500 Cats to free me from my lord. Let me fight for you, outsider, as a mighty warrior once again. Peasant life is killing my soul, I need battle.

Under the Shek Kingdom's system, retainers are the lowest class of Shek: farmers, craftsmen and general workers, ranked below the warrior caste of Shek Warriors and Hundred Guardians. The point that matters here is that because they are not warriors, their horns are cut off — Oron is not an exception, that is simply what a retainer is. Hornless Shek recruits all mention that a fee must be paid to their master before they can be freed, which the wiki reads as a form of indentured servitude. To a Shek, whose horns are a source of pride, that is worse than death.

Beyond that recruitment exchange, Oron has no dialogue of his own at all. He will not chatter at you the whole way like Beep; once he joins he is just a silent Shek.

Recruitment and value for money

The recruitment cost is a flat 3,500 Cats, paid once with no prerequisites and no relations threshold.

Open up his stats, though, and what that money buys is fairly limited:

ItemValue
Strength5.5–12.1
Toughness-2.4–4.8
Dexterity1.6–6.4
Melee Attack8.4–15.6
Athletics5.6–10.4
Heavy Weapons5–11
Hackers / Blunt / Perception / Melee Defence2–8
Katanas / Sabres / Polearms / Martial Arts-2–4

NoteMeasured against the same crop of bar recruits, Oron is not a bargain. Ruka turns up in the same three Shek towns he does, yet is completely free and has combat skills at 10; Rane the Giant asks 7,500 but has every combat skill at 20; Kang at 6,000 is likewise all 20. Oron's only edge is being a cheap Shek.

One detail is easy to miss: the Horse Chopper he carries is a sabre, and Sabres happens to sit in his worst band of skills (-2–4), while the Heavy Weapons 5–11 that he is actually decent at has no weapon to go with it. Getting any use out of that blade means putting the hours into Sabres first.

What really deserves attention is his race. The Shek carry a racial multiplier of +20% Attack, +20% Toughness and +10% Strength — the wiki files these under experience multipliers, meaning those skills train faster than normal, and the same multiplier is also applied to a character's starting skill values. Their bone plates add 25 hit points, though the wiki is explicit that the plates grant no actual damage resistance in game, contrary to what the race description's "natural armour" line implies. Oron's starting numbers are ugly, but he is a high-HP blank slate who trains Toughness quickly, and throwing him onto the front line early suits him. The Horse Chopper he carries is of Ancient manufacture (1,491–2,066 Cats), so at least you do not have to buy him a weapon.

The armour he wears is Shoddy grade (5% chance of Standard), which is essentially the same as wearing nothing.
