English:Griffin · Characters
A former Holy Nation soldier waiting in a bar for a "wealthy wanderer" because Okran sent him a dream. Nine thousand cats buys an all-purpose fighter who can pick up almost any melee weapon and use it.
I had a dream last night... The Lord of Light Okran himself came to me, and he told me that I would meet a wealthy wanderer from the outside...
Griffin is a unique recruitable character scattered across the bars of Holy Nation towns. He insists that Okran granted him a vision: he would meet a wealthy traveller, and that traveller would lead him to the truth of the First Extinction. Believe him or not, he has decided that the traveller is you — and asks for 9,000 Cats as proof that you really are wealthy.
How far he stands from the Holy Nation
Griffin served as a Holy Nation soldier, but the values he carries have come apart from the official line in two places:
- He is not particularly prejudiced against other races and is willing to travel with non-humans — close to heresy inside the Holy Nation's system.
- He does not necessarily believe the Skeletons caused the First Extinction, which is precisely what the Holy Nation proclaims over and over.
In other words, the character is written as someone who has begun looking for his own answers but has not entirely stepped outside the framework of the faith. He has an Honorable personality, his own dialogue package, and several lines only he will say.
Why he is worth nine thousand
As early recruits go, Griffin's stat structure is fairly unusual — nothing about him stands out on a single axis; instead the entire melee line arrives complete in one go:
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Strength / Dexterity | 20 / 20 |
| Katanas, Sabres, Hackers, Heavy Weapons, Blunt | all 20 |
| Polearms | 1 (the sole exception) |
| Melee attack / melee defence | 20 / 20 |
| Athletics | 20 |
| Toughness | 1 |
| Perception, Dodge, Martial Arts, Stealth, Thievery, Engineer, Labouring | around 0–1 |
| Field Medic | 5 |
That means you can hand him any melee weapon at all and he is combat-ready on the spot, without first spending dozens of hours grinding the basic skills. Athletics 20 is also enough for him to outrun early pursuers such as Starving Bandits and Fogmen.
Where to find him
He appears in the bars of Holy Nation towns; exactly which one depends on the world state:
- Bad Teeth — as long as the town has not been taken over by another faction.
- Blister Hill — both the original state and the version taken over by the Flotsam Ninjas are possible.
- Drin — a chance of appearing if the town is taken over by the Holy Nation.
- Stack — possible either in its original state or in ruins.
He starts in a Wool Hat, a Dark Leather Shirt, Drifter's Leather Pants and boots, carrying a Standard First Aid Kit; the armour is [Shoddy] (5% chance of [Standard]) and the weapons are manufactured by Ancient. This starting kit has almost no combat value and should be replaced the moment he is recruited.
