DackReport

English:Dack · Characters

The skeleton who keeps shop alongside the trader Quin at the Scraphouse, and who hoards anything shiny; his everyday bickering with Quin is the key exhibit lore hunters cite against the idea that skeletons share a mainframe.

Exiles make me nervous, Quin. What is he doing out here in the Black Desert? Is he a human spy? Has his CPU been hacked? — Dack, on seeing a skeleton player character

Dack is a member of the Skeleton faction and a permanent fixture of the Scraphouse — the still-operating ancient factory east of the Black Desert City, with acid rain falling all around it. The shop itself is minded by Quin; Dack is the companion standing beside him, chipping in.

The one who picks up shiny things

Dack has one quirk that comes up again and again: anything shiny, he wants to put away. Quin clearly finds this exasperating, and greets customers by first apologising for the mess, then adding that "Dack's hidden all the shiny things, he's a bit of an idiot really" — after which Quin says Dack took a blow to the head back during the Great Cha… er, a long time ago, swallowing the word halfway through. The word he does not finish points at the Chaos Age.

The hoarding has real consequences in-game: the Scraphouse is one of the hardest shops in the whole game to rob. Its shelves hold AI Cores, Ancient Science Books and high-tier weapon blueprints — top-shelf goods — and Dack, along with a full complement of Soldierbot guards, patrols between the crates.

A character with no mouth

A technical curiosity: Dack has no dialogue package of his own. Every conversation that makes him speak is, in the game data, attached to Quin. What the player sees as "Dack said something" is Quin's dialogue tree speaking on his behalf.

Precisely because of that, Dack's standing in lore discussion far exceeds his screen time. The first example the research community reaches for to refute the "Skeleton Mainframe" hypothesis is Dack and Quin squabbling over who left what lying about — if skeletons really shared a direct data link, there would be no need whatsoever for that kind of back-and-forth verbal argument. The same set of lines is also cited in the debate over whether a reset truly erases memory.

Combat and gear

Dack's numbers are pure skeleton spec: almost everything sits at 80. Strength, Toughness, Dexterity, every weapon skill, Melee Attack and Melee Defence, Athletics, Swimming and Field Medic are all 80, while Heavy Weapons and Turrets climb as high as 96, with Assassination at 40. His only weak points are Dodge (6.4), Martial Arts (8) and all of the thievery, engineering and crafting skills (around 1).

Which means one thing: he is not a bystander you can brush aside. If you intend to steal from or rob the Scraphouse, Dack is the hard wall standing beside the goods.

For gear he carries a Moon Cleaver on his back — a hacker-class weapon with +30% armour penetration and bonus damage against machines — and wears a Dustcoat; his main weapon is an Ancient-manufacture blade, with an equal one-third chance of each of the three grades. His armour is fixed at Standard (5% chance of High Grade).
