ShrykeReport

English:Shryke · Characters

A treasure hunter stranded in Mongrel. Ever since her brother was dragged off by the Fogmen she has not dared leave town again — she joins for free, but first you have to convince her this squad can actually get out.

Shryke is a recruitable unique character, a treasure hunter stranded in Mongrel. She went into the Fog Islands after treasure, and found she could get in but not out.

Why she does not leave

Ask her why she does not leave Mongrel and you get the most honest answer in town:

Oh, I want to, believe me. But every single time I pluck up the courage, my dear old brother's tortured screams echo in my mind. And that's when I remember that perhaps a lack of sunlight and the odd back-pain grumble from Crumblejon isn't such a bad thing after all. Not compared to my fate that lurks in the fogs... I mean sure, it's easy to throw out suggestions, captain obvious, but talking about it is much easier than doing it.

She had a brother who did not make it into Mongrel. The game never states his fate, but the countless Fogmen outside the walls supply the only plausible answer — he was in all likelihood dragged off and eaten alive. She has a scar on her hand which she may have picked up forcing her way into the fog town, or on some earlier expedition; here too the game gives no answer.

That monologue explains Mongrel's state of mind: the people in the town are not ignorant of what is outside. They know it far too well.

Recruitment

Free. As long as the squad looks capable of taking her with it, she will come.

One detail: when the player's squad has fewer than three members she acts noticeably more hesitant — but she joins in the end regardless. The hesitation is performance, not a condition.

TipShe is also the first person in Mongrel to say outright that the food stores will not last much longer. The town lives on supplies from outside, and outsiders are getting rarer.

Stats randomise by 3 points and are then multiplied by the Scorchlander racial modifier.

Put plainly: she has almost no capabilities at all. Recruiting her is not about combat power but about a body you can train and a good story. The Scorchlander racial modifier favours Martial Arts and Athletics, so developing her long-term is not a loss; in the short term, though, she is effectively a protection target in the Fog Islands.

NoteThe stretch of road that gets her out of Mongrel is one of the highest-risk movements in the game. Fogmen charge in packs and preferentially bring down members who are isolated and slow, and she is both.

Exclusive dialogue

She has five unique lines, three of which are hers alone; once recruited she runs the "Player TOUGH Merc" dialogue package, with a personality set to Smart. She reacts on entering certain regions, for example:

Wouldn't mind getting my hands on that small fortune... Pretty sure the Tech Hunters cleared the island out long ago though, last I heard. — on entering Fishman Island
... Great, Vain. I wouldn't buy a loaf of bread from a bug merchant if I was starving to death. Scamming bastards. ... Scamming adorable bastards.

Gear and appearance

She wears Mercenary Leather Armour, a Blackened Chain Shirt, Stout Hessian and Drifter's Boots, with Ashlander Stormgoggles on her head and a polearm in hand. The armour quality is [Shoddy] (5% chance of [Standard]) — the worst tier among any recruitable character in the game — which on arrival is essentially the same as being naked.

She carries Chewsticks and a Lantern of Radiance; the latter is genuinely useful in the perpetually lightless Fog Islands.

TipMost Scorchlanders have white hair, but Shryke's is red-pink — natural or dyed, either is possible.
